Carlisle Castle

Great for: Castle, History

Travel Time: Within 30 MIns

Carlisle is known as the Great Border City due to its location on the border between Scotland and England with the castle built towards the end of the 11th century to try and secure the northern English border. An indication of how volatile the region was is that the castle has been besieged more than any other place in the British Isles.

Throughout its history the castle has been updated and upgraded to meet the latest military requirements and was until recently the garrison for the Border Regiment. Despite this active history large parts of the castle remain in excellent condition including the curtain walls, keep and outer gatehouse. Now maintained by English Heritage it provides an excellent historical outing and can be combined with the nearby Tullie House (across the road) and the Cumbrian Museum of Military Life which is located within the castle itself.
